Olympic gold medalist Katie Archibald has admitted that before her partner, Scottish mountain biker Rab Wardell, passed away on Tuesday morning, she attempted to revive him.
Mountain cyclist Rab Wardell passed away at the age of 37 while sleeping, just two days after winning the Scottish championship.
In Dumfries and Galloway over the past weekend, Wardell won the top men's division of the Scottish MTB XC Championships. The biker then discussed his accomplishment on Monday night's The Nine program on BBC Scotland, stating that he had overcome three flat tires to win.
The 37-year-old was at home with Wardell's partner and two-time Olympic track cycling champion Katie Archibald when he passed away. The Daily Telegraph(opens in new tab) reports that Wardell is thought to have experienced an apparent heart attack.
I believe you've heard that Rab passed away yesterday morning, but I still don't know what occurred, if this is true, or why he'd be taken now when he was so well and joyful.
While we were in bed, he suffered a heart arrest. He stopped breathing, and despite my best efforts and the paramedics' quick response time, they were unable to revive him. Mine ended along with it.
"I need him here with me and I love him so much. I really need him here, but he's already left. This ache defies description. Thank you to everyone who paid tribute. I'm unable to say anything because I can't stand to discuss him in the past tense. Rab, you are everything to me. I cherish you.
Wardell, who lives in Glasgow, has been competing in mountain bike races since he was a teenager but only recently turned pro.
Wardell finished the 96-mile West Highland Way in a new record time of 9-14-32 in 2020, setting a new benchmark for riders. Scottish Cycling called his victory at Kirroughtree Forest over the weekend a "display of great resilience."
